Police discovered 40 pythons in a motel room in Canada on Thursday. Investigators said the snakes were kept in plastic storage bins and looked "troubled.
"They were all entangled," Brandon James, an inspector with the Brant County SPCA told the St. Catharines Standard. "They were in distress because of the overcrowding."
James also said the snakes were dehydrated.
The 40 pythons found in the motel room in Brantford, Ontario were all ball pythons and measured between 1 and 4.5 feet in length. It's illegal to own a python on Brantford.
National Post reports that the guests who were staying in the room where the 40 pythons were found were out to dinner when the police raided the room. Another hotel guest said the couple had five children, including a baby. It's unclear whether or not any charges will be filed against the couple.
Ball pythons are the smallest of the nonvenomous African pythons. It is popular in the pet trade because of its docile nature and relatively small size. It gets its name from its tendency to curl up into a ball with its head tucked in when the snake feels threatened.
So are the snakes dangerous? According to New York Daily News, not really. The snakes were well-handled and tame, and are the most docile of the African pythons.
The discovery of the 40 pythons in the motel room in Brantford comes just 10 days after the tragic death of two young boys who were killed by a 14-foot python in New Brunswick.
The kind of snake that killed the twins was an African rock python, Africa's largest python and one with a very nasty reputation.
