Cooking a fresh, whole food diet is the only way to avoid the questionable ingredients found in processed foods. Nobody wants to think what he or she is eating is poisonous.
However, it may surprise you to learn certain common ingredients are toxic — and still widely used! These ingredients are almost universally used in foods that arrive in a bag, box, or can — a whopping 70 per cent of the American diet.
Here are five common toxins to avoid and why:
AspartameAspartame 5 Toxic Poisons Added to ALL Prepackaged FoodsAspartame is an artificial sweetener that is found in diet sodas and other low-calorie foods. Studies have linked aspartame to all manner of horrible diseases, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia, as well as, most recently, fast-paced kidney decline.
If that’s not enough to put you off, we don’t know what is!
Food Dyes
Blue, yellow, red, and green food dyes have all been implicated in serious illnesses. The artificial colors yellow 6, red 3, green 3, and blues 1 and 2 have been linked to bladder, brain, kidney, adrenal, and thyroid cancers, as well as hyperactivity and behavioral problems in some children. Some of the dyes still widely used in the United States are already banned in the Europe.
Corn Syrup
It sounds harmless, but high-fructose corn syrup has a lot to answer for. This universally used sweetener is even being blamed as a major contributor to the American obesity epidemic.
Not only that, HFCS has been linked to diabetes and liver disease. Doctors liken its effect on the brain to cocaine’s.
Avoid it at all costs.
MSG
Monosodium glutamate is a flavor enhancer added to countless processed foods. Composed primarily of free glutamic acid and sodium, this additive apparently messes with our brain chemistry.
Some have linked it to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. While a debate rages on exactly how harmful MSG may be, many believe it is simply safer to stay away and flavor your food yourself.
The Benzoates
Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Benzoate are widely used as food preservatives. These ingredients form benzene — a known carcinogen that is also linked with thyroid damage — when combined with Vitamin C. Dangerous levels can build up when plastic soda bottles are exposed to heat and light.
The solution should be obvious.
Avoid packaged foods and make fresh meals for yourself and your family. Cooking your own meals allows you to be in control of fat, portion controls, carbohydrates, flavors, and other aspects of nutrition health. It’s a little more trouble, but this strategy really could save your life or the lives of your loved ones.
